Childhood and adolescence are periods of continuous growth and development. Appropriate diet and physical activity are essential for children to reduce the risk of diet related to chronic diseases in later stages of life. A dietary survey done among 110 school children of Government Primary School in Shivabasav Nagar, to assess the gaps in the balanced diet of children in the age group 5-17 using ICMR-NIN guidelines, revealed that students are lacking in consumption of green leafy vegetables, fruits and fat in their regular diet.

With the aim of reducing and preventing malnutrition among children we started the evening snack program at GKHPS Shivabasav Nagar in July 2018. Every evening all the children of the school are provided nutritious, home-made and tasty snacks like Shenga Holige with ghee (a Poli or a sweet flatbread made of groundnuts, jaggery, wheat and sesame seeds), Shenga Ladoo, Rava Ladoo, Methi and Palak Parathas (flatbreads made with wheat and fenugreek or spinach leaves) with ghee, seasonal fruits and germinated seed salad.
